So, you’re now driving independently through various traffic situations and volumes at different times of the day, in differing weather conditions, seeing potential hazards early and driving well. You and Dreamstart are feeling confident enough to book your test. You will need your provisional licence close to hand, your theory test certificate, as well as your Driving Instructor Number and a method of payment, or alternatively let us take the strain and book on your behalf. No problem.

IMG_0625Now is the time of the final preparations, so take time to understand your responsibilities as a Driver (in terms of fitness to drive, medicines, eye sight, mobile phone, alcohol and drug use and vehicle condition). Know all of the Show and Tell questions and correct answers. (Quick tip – two confident answers at this early stage in the test could go along way to settle the nerves before even turning the key). Work through all of the manoeuvres in the week prior to the test, if you have an opportunity to practice with a family member, spend as much time as you can behind the wheel. It is advisable to continue to practice with the same person to make good progress.

Make sure you get enough sleep and you have all of your documents ready the day before. Eat something before you head out, so that you are fresh, full of energy and are completely prepared.

Book an hour with Dreamstart prior to the test, use your own vehicle (you will have to bring a mirror for the Assessor) or the Dreamstart vehicle, which ever suits you more. This lesson will prioritise calming any last minute nerves, working through a few driving situations, responsibilities and your knowledge of the car, controls and under the bonnet.

Arriving within 10 minutes of the test time, the worst part of the test is waiting for the Assessor to call out your name. First they will ask if anyone will be accompanying you, check your paperwork and check your eyesight by asking you to read out a number plate at the required distance. The Show and Tell questions come next, you will then be asked to get in to your vehicle while they make final vehicle checks. (Quick tip – it’s always good to check the temperature controls, fans etc so you don’t get overheated, or fog up the windscreen during the test).

Once inside, the test procedure will be explained to you and if you understand. Once under way the Assessor will ask you to follow the road ahead unless you are given specific directions. This route will include different road and traffic conditions, which you will be expected to drive through safely. You will also be asked to perform one of the reversing manoeuvres and possibly an emergency stop. There will be a section of independent driving, when you will be asked to follow road signs for a maximum of 10 minutes.

When you return to the test centre the Assessor will give you the result of your test immediately and will then go through any/all of the situations that may require comment. This is a very useful debrief, regardless of your result, so that you can understand where you could make improvements to your performance.

Above all else, remember that the Assessor needs to be assured that you have the skill to drive safely alone, and continue to practice and improve your skills. Nothing beats clocking up mileage and driving experiences to keep you safe and away from incidents. This in due course, will lead to reductions in premiums and a build up of no claims bonus with the insurance company.

It’s not about passing the test, it’s about you being a safe and confident driver for life and enjoying the freedom driving brings.

I love it and know you will too.
